Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Iceland is a land of contradictions, where ice and fire coexist, stunningly displaying nature’s beauty. Iceland is renowned for its iconic attraction, the Blue Lagoon. It’s a geothermal spa nestled in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. People flock here to luxuriate in the lagoon’s warm, mineral-infused waters.

The Blue Lagoon is actually a man-made wonder. It utilizes the by-product water from a nearby geothermal power plant. This water, superheated from the ground, powers turbines to generate electricity. Afterward, the steam and hot water pass through a heat exchanger, providing heat for a municipal water heating system. Finally, the water is fed into the Lagoon for everyone to enjoy!

I visited the Blue Lagoon in September. The contrast between the chilly weather outside and the warm waters of the lagoon is truly remarkable. It is like the body is experiencing two different temperatures at once. It’s amazing how the body can feel both hot and cold at the same time when immersed in the Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters. Once you are in the water, though, it is easy to relax and let the warmth seep into your muscles. The water temperature in the lagoon’s bathing and swimming areas averages 40 degrees Celsius, making it a truly unique and relaxing experience. Visitors must take a shower before using the geothermal spa.

Blue Lagoon is open year-round, and visitors are required to book their tickets online at least one month in advance. You can book time slots every hour from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Please note that the closing time of the lagoon varies depending on the season. But guests must always exit the water 30 minutes before closing). It is best to book your preferred time slot early, as they tend to fill up quickly. There are different booking packages available, such as Comfort, Premium, and Retreat Spa.

Why is the Blue Lagoon blue? – The Blue Lagoon gets its blue color from the presence of silica, a mineral compound found in the water. When this mineral is suspended in the water, it reflects blue light while absorbing other colors. That’s why the Blue Lagoon appears blue! It’s pretty cool, right?

Blue Lagoon contains several minerals, such as silica, sulfur, and algae. Combining these minerals makes the Blue Lagoon’s water nutrient-rich and offers therapeutic benefits.

Silica – The mask is suitable for all skin types. The Blue Lagoon provides a silica mask that can enhance the skin’s barrier function, imparting strength, protection, and radiance. However, it is recommended to apply the mask on a small area when using it for the first time.

Sulfur – It is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, which aid in soothing redness and irritation. Not only that, but it can also work wonders for conditions like acne, rosacea, and dermatitis. It’s like a superhero for your skin!

Algae – The water has blue-green algae, which is packed with vitamins, amino acids, and minerals. Algae is believed to help improve skin texture and tone, boost hydration, and promote detoxification.

First, we entered the Blue Lagoon and showed our online booked tickets. They provided us with a hand band, which was also a scanner for our locker. The locker room was huge, with lots of personal lockers. Each cabin of the locker room had a shower room, which was convenient. Mobile phones are allowed inside the lagoon, but it is better to carry a water protection cover for your phone. If you don’t have one, you can buy it there, but it’s quite expensive. We paid ISK 3191 (Rs 2000) for the phone cover.

Imagine soaking in a milky-blue geothermal pool surrounded by lava fields and snowy mountains while chilly air nips at your cheeks. Volcanic rocks surround the Blue Lagoon, and the beautiful mountain view adds to its natural beauty. Steam is continuously generated from the lagoon, providing heat to the body, which is truly relaxing.

The dining and refreshment options at Blue Lagoon are diverse and offer something for everyone. Visitors can explore Lava Restaurant, Moss Restaurant, Spa Restaurant, The Blue Cafe, and In-water Bar.

One complimentary drink of your choice is provided, and visitors can purchase more if they wish. There is a drink counter located between the lagoon, so you can enjoy a drink while relaxing in the steamy water. Beautiful views, and healing waters full of minerals, great for your skin and health make it an unforgettable experience.
